[JITF2020] Interpreting in the Animation Production Field – Communication that Stimulates Creativeness

Chris Takagi

Graduated from University of Hawaii.  In-house interpreter at a leading Japanese animation production company.  Active as an interpreter in fields such as CG, animation and video production.  He was the champion in the 2019 “Simultaneous Interpretation Grand Prix,” the largest interpreting contest in Japan.  He is also known as a rapper who was the top prizewinner in the B-BOY PARK2003 MC battle. His most recent work is “Rokuro” (2017).  He wrote a series of articles in the “ENGLISH JOURNAL” with the title “Rap in English!”

It is often said that “animation is communication.”  It is the “animation interpreter” who supports communication for animation-making behind the scenes.  Based on his experience on the forefront of producing “anime, ” a content type representative of Japan, the speaker will explain “how animations are produced” and “how the interpreter is involved in the process,” giving a glimpse into the little-known world of animation interpreting with all its excitement and sense of fulfillment.
