(Hopefully) Getting to Yes: Negotiating Your Way Up
Many interpreters are not familiar with the idea of negotiating to get what they are really worth. In some cases, they do not even know what they are worth. Understanding your true value as an interpreter and strategically conveying that to the other side require a unique set of skills, but this is a skill set we already have—it’s just that many of us are simply not aware of it. In this session, the speaker will introduce some basic concepts in negotiation and behavioral economics, and offer tips and insights to help you climb up the interpreter’s career ladder.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia, Mike moved to Okinawa to work as a full-time project translator/interpreter at the G8 summit in Okinawa. For many years he worked primarily with politicians and attorneys, but in recent years he has been active in other areas like architecture, design, modern art, video games, sports, and entertainment in general. Often grumpy in the morning, but a nice cup of soup always gets the engine going. Shaken, not stirred. Currently based in Tokyo.
